Green Traveller

We are trying to make a difference to our planet at The Backpack.

You can rest assured that by choosing to stay with us, you are making a difference as well.

The Backpack Worm Farm

The majority of our cleaning products are bio-degradable and septic tank safe; and the company collects and reuses their containers
Vegetable waste from the kitchen is used to feed our worm farms
Table scraps go into the bokashi and taken to the Woodstock Peace Garden
The compost and worm tea from the worm farm is used in our garden
Throughout the building you will find colour-coded recycling bins, we have a separate company that collects our recyclable materials
The garden at the entrance is waterwise
We support local artists by selling their arts and crafts in our community shop
We make use of solar hot water geysers and heat pumps; and water-wise shower heads
Where possible we use LED light bulbs
We have battery containers on the premises and recycle batteries at a local store
Our old computer hardware is donated to a computer company, who rebuilds this into computers which are donated to disadvantaged schools
Printer cartridges are recycled at a primary school in the area
The napkins and take-away containers in the Cafe are all compostable and / or bio-degradable
Our juice supplier has been chosen due to the company collecting and reusing their containers
Tap water is available to our guests in reusable glass bottles; we do not stock plastic water bottles
Discarded beer bottle tops are saved and donated to a local artist who turns these into fridge magnets and other crafts, creating sustainable employment for himself

MONTHLY RECYCLING
Our recycling company, Recycle1St, monitors our monthly recycling and sends us a breakdown of what we have recycled.
